Case Study 1

Temple Heelis Solicitors & Temple Heelis Financial Services Ltd.

Background

As one of the largest Law firms in the North of England — Temple Heelis were suffering from an identity crisis and poor market profile. Our task was to respect the
original associations to the Lake District, company heritage and existing tripartite leaf logo identity.

Identity

With this in mind, we started by exploring alternative leaf shapes, simplyfying them into more geometrical representations than literal forms. We looked at the colours of the Lake District and developed a strong colour palette reflecting the environmental surroundings. Combining these new shapes and tones with a clean serif typeface resulted in a fresh and modern identity.

Branding and Application

To supprt the newly created identity we sourced a strong portfolio of imagery from local photographer Stuart Holmes, whose striking panaramas of the Lake District combined breathtaking scenery with the adventure sport of paragliding. These images portrayed a very clear message - Temple Heelis, based in beautiful Cumbria is not only respectful to its heritage and environment but also dynamic, creative and prepared to try new things.

Application to stationery, literature, ad campaigns and website all followed with positive responses from internal and external sources.

Client Testimonial

The old logo was tired and uninspiring, much of the printed materials looked dated and our website looked amateurish. Essentially, the current image did not portray the size of the business, the high quality of our services or the firm’s ambitions. It was time for change!

We knew that we wanted to get away from the traditional stuffy image of the legal sector with its fountain pens, parchment paper and scales of justice. Temple Heelis was after all a modern, multi-disciplined, dynamic and forward thinking firm of solicitors with clients throughout the country. We knew it was important for us to portray this within the corporate identity and imagery in order to update our look and to differentiate ourselves in a highly competitive market.

LavaHouse Associates were recommended to us. That alone said a lot about them before we even met. When we did meet, we built an instant rapport with them and were impressed by their professionalism and enthusiasm. We particularly liked the fact that they listened to us and from their understanding of our business, that they had also done their homework!

Right from the outset, we liked the ideas that were proposed and these were quickly narrowed down and developed into an identity that everyone was pleased with. The partners within the firm were especially pleased with the use of photography that combined the modern sport of paragliding with views of the Lake District. These images, in many ways, crossed the bridge from the traditional to the modern and by doing so, offered a new perspective of Temple Heelis.

Working together, we went on to successfully incorporate the new identity in all our printed material, signage and online presence and were pleased to receive positive feedback from clients and staff alike. Most importantly, the re-brand has signalled a fresh start for the firm and provided the additional confidence for us to build on our previous successes and compete at the highest level in order to take the business forward.

Case Study 2

YMCA National Centre, Lakeside

Background

The YMCA National Centre based on the shores of Lake Windermere at Lakeside approached Lavahouse with a view to improve their visual marketing and printed materials in their Professional Development department.

Analysis

Lavahouse met with the team at Lakeside and undertook an assessment of the facility. It soon became clear that all of the Centre's departments lacked any visual cohesion and a total refresh of the brand was required. As well as the initial Professional Development brief, Lavahouse was required to develop a style for the Schools, Youth and Sports sectors that Lakeside cater for.

Branding and Application

This soon became one of Lavahouses most comprehensive and demanding projects to date. Within each sector we helped create sub-brands covering all of the services on offer. Each sub-brand was given it's own identity, but remained part of a family. Lavahouse worked with photographer Henry Iddon and art directed several photo shoots, developing a strong portfolio of images that were used in associated print brochures and throughout the new website which was also designed by Lavahouse, in a collaboration with Crome Internet who developed the site.

Application to stationery, literature, ad campaigns and website all followed with positive responses from internal and external sources.

Full integration and consultancy on brand development and marketing application is still ongoing.

Sales have been marked to increase by as much as 20% on promotion of the new brochures and site.

Client Testimonial

I chose to use Lavahouse for a number of reasons that, in my experience, are crucially important for sustained business success.

The first is that Lavahouse take an integrated approach, in that they seek to understand how any piece of work will be used in the context of overall business objectives.

Second, as a consequence there is a focus from the outset of a project on return on investment. This is something I find refreshing and unusual in a design agency.

Thirdly, the customer service is excellent. The whole team at Lavahouse are committed and passionate, building trust, meeting deadlines no matter how tight they are, and really making you feel that you are their most important client.

Finally, and most importantly, the results - across a broad spectrum, the creative output is outstanding.
